I've had a serious interest in photography ever since I was in junior high school, when I had such a good time in the 8th grade photography class that the next year I actually signed up to be a teacher's aide for the class so that I could get ongoing access to the darkroom (one major difference between now and then is that I find the idea of supervising a bunch of 8th graders in a darkroom much scarier now).
I've long harbored a fantasy of being able to afford a house with space for a darkroom. Though the bursting of the dotcom bubble put that fantasy on hold for a while, it did yield some positive dividends, including not only smaller traffic jams and reduced competition for parking in downtown Palo Alto, but also a surfeit of cheap, surplus high quality computer equipment, much of it new or nearly so. Consequently, shortly after the turn of the millenium I was able to accumulate most of the components of a pretty good "digital darkroom". While this cornucopia didn't include a decent digital camera, none of which then met my standards at a price competitive with, say, a new luxury car, it did include a fairly good Polaroid film scanner and so I've managed to digitize, catalog and organize my existing portfolio.
More recently, I've gone completely digital, and time permitting I hope to have some of the fruits of that on display here soon as well.
This page leads to my online gallery, where I've put on display some of the pictures I've shot over the past 25 or so years. Personal web pages may be the ultimate form of vanity (especially ones with pictures!), but I'm actually quite proud of some of these pictures and so enjoy sharing them. (I also have what is probably the world's largest collection of photographs that are overexposed even though they were taken in the middle of the night, but I'll keep those to myself. And at least I'm not posting snapshots from the family reunion or pictures of my cats.) There are two ways in, depending on your bandwidth and appetite for adventure:
While I'm not a professional photographer, these pictures do represent my serious creative effort. They are owned and copyrighted by me. These images are for your personal use. You can link to them or add them to your screen saver or print them out to hang over your desk, etc., but you cannot redistribute or republish them in any form. You cannot give nor sell them to other people. If you want to redistribute this work for some reason, contact me and we'll talk; I'm pretty reasonable.
This is probably also an appropriate place to insert a link to Ctein, a remarkable photographer whose own website
helped inspire me to put this gallery together. Ctein is a true artist (that
is to say, the real deal, in contrast to a mere enthusiast like me) whose
photographic work I admire utterly. He has also been a good friend whose
generous and patient advice has made my art rather better than it would
otherwise be. Go buy some of his pictures.
